Shimon Peres played a pivotal role in the Middle East for 50 years.  From close aide to his country’s first prime minister, David Ben-Gurion, Peres became key to establishing its nuclear programme, before taking on one of the most challenging jobs in the world, Prime Minister of Israel (1984-6; 1995-6), and then President (2007-2014).
